01/25/2003 Entry: "hosting companies"

Song: White Destiny, Pretear
I don't think anything annoys me more than not getting what I paid for. (ok maybe there are some other things that annoy me just as much, but this is certainly one of the tops) Cyberpixels has been down since the night of January 24th, that's including ALL servers, as well as their own webpage. I checked several of my friends' domains, all of whom I knew had Cyberpixels for hosting. None of them were up, so this is definitely not just my domain. I've noticed small down times for my domain since I signed up with Cyberpixels. They weren't anything big, about 10 to 15 minutes and they weren't too frequent, so I didn't mind much. But if all the servers were down, and they have no backup generators, and even their own webpage is down, you can't blame me for becoming suspicious. O.o At approximately 3:40pm today, they're back up, and it seems they've been hit by a virus, which worms into servers. More info here. From their explanation, I take back most of my blame, because various other hosting companies have also experienced this virus. But, various other webhosting companies haven't, such as Hostrocket and iPowerWeb. I've heard from numerous people that Cyberpixels was very good, and from what I've seen, they haven't gotten a lower grade than an A- on a review. So I figured they were pretty reliable. Since they are the first hosting company I've gone with, I can't compare them to any others, but I'm willing to bet Hostrocket is better at reliability, because they haven't been down very much at all from what I've heard from Nahi-chan, and she's on practically 24/7. xP I'm already thinking of switching to Hostrocket in September when the hosting expires, now I'm about 99.9% sure I'm going to switch. Although, I just found out about iPowerWeb from Annie, and their only plan looks so good! o.o I haven't heard anything about their reputation though, so I'm a little reluctant to go with them.

Then there's Hostradius, run by Shi and Zed, created after Shi left Cyberpixels (I've been hearing that Cyberpixels has gone downhill since Shi left). I've heard some very nice things about hostradius, and they do have pretty good plans, so when I purchase hosting for asylum*nu later this year, I'll most likely get hosting at Hostradius. I have until December to see how good Hostradius really is. I also have until September to see how Cyberpixels will hold up. Eh, that's the update. x.x While we're on this topic though, what do you guys think? Should I go with iPowerWeb, Hostrocket, Hostradius or stay with Cyberpixels? Dodo's board provides some recommendations, good hosts vs. bad hosts.

*wai* I was going to go w/ hostradius (darn good deals and and best praised) but they're not accepting any more submissions right now ;_;

Umm.. hi. :D Been reading for a long time.
I just wanted to let you know that I personally used Hostrocket, and I'd never recommend them from my own personal experiences. I used them for my now dead blog domain and they suspended it and never let me have it back for no reason whatsoever. I'd never recommend them because when I did have it, they had frequent downtimes and never responded to any of the questions I ever sent them.
Sooo, maybe it's improved since I lost my domain through them, but I'd figured I'd warn you in case. :D
There's a lot better hosting services in my opinion, but make your own choices.

Not to add to your list, but I have HostRocket, NoMonthlyFees.com and BCSWebCo. Out of all of those I like nomonthlyfees.com the best. I have had downtime from them only once in 2 years of service. And that was only for an hour and a half. It's also pretty cheap and the service is great. Hostrocket has a lot more downtime, but it's still very good. BCSWebCo is the single best one I've ever found but it's incredibly expensive in comparison.

Just wanted to put in my two cents. ;)

As far as the tech support topic I have not had a single problem with Hostrocket getting back to me quickly. Usually I'll post a message to them which they call a "trouble ticket" and within 15-20 minutes after even rating it at a low rating meaning it isn't high priority I hear back from them. They usually give good answers to my questions also. I've been actually very pleased with them in comparison to other hosting companies I've heard from and I'm practicly a newbie at owning a domain. But you choose what is best for you.

phew.. thank you for telling me about cyberpixels. I think I may stay with my old webserver, they've only crashed on me once. Now to get the money..

I'd choose HostRadius. Hostradius sounds reliable, especially since it only accepts new customers if there's enough resources, as opposed to other companies trying to take as many customers as they can.

Larger companies with cheap plans like Hostrocket are horrible with the tech support. They cut down on number of staff to keep prices low. Too many clients, not enough staff, therefore slow response to tech questions.

Wow! I didn't even have a clue that the Cyberpixels stuff went down. At least windam.net is back up. I hope that it didn't really cause any damage.
