12/28/2002 Archived Entry: "hosting xD"

Song: At the Beginning, Richard Marx & Donna Lewis
As I mentioned in the previous entry, I'm thinking of making a portfolio housing all of my non-anime designs. Now, I really would like to separate my anime creations apart from my personal creations. So, yes, I'm getting a new domain. ^_^ This was decided about a month ago, and I wasn't sure when, but then I got a free .nu domain offer from nunames. *cheers* xD I've always wanted a .nu domain, as it's my favorite extension, with .net following closely. However, I currently have no way of paying for the hosting (long story and not b/c I don't have money) so...I need a host, and my domain name will redirect to there. *halo goes up* :P I just need space for my portfolio (small anyway) and the main site. I know Serene would be happy to host me, and I'm ever-so-grateful for that, but I'm already taking up a lot of space on her domain and I don't want to take up anymore. =_= I feel so bad asking her to host multiple times before I got a domain. Also, I hope I can have this portfolio on a non-anime-related domain, since it's more personal. Right now I don't have many non-anime-related domains in mind, since most people I know have anime-related domains/sites. So, I'm currently scrunging the net for a decent-looking host...any suggestions? :D

I found this a bit amusing, as I was cleaning out my old drafts in my inbox yesterday. I have a tendency to save my first hosting application and such, and I while I was going over those the other day, I was laughing at myself for how immature I sounded and how I found it ridiculous that I actually got accepted for hosting. I must have been a terrible "newbie" to the internet and the webdesign world. I used abbreviations such as "u" and "thx" way too much, and in general, I really sounded childish. It's amazing how someone can progress huh? :3 I do remember though, that I was never into the sticky caps (tYpInG LiKE DiS) or abbreviating "the" and making it into "de." I actually do understand why some people type like that. Mostly everyone who do not design/make websites type like that online. Maybe not sticky caps but mostly the abbreviating. For instance, whenever I talk to my IRL friends online, they type using a hell-lot of abbreviations and *gawd-awful* spelling, mind you. It's instances like those that I'm glad I have a good "grouping" skills (referring to term in psych) so I can easily seperate "shew as" into "she was."

I'm becoming increasingly annoyed at how many "elite" cliques are popping up here and there. I'm disappointed to say that even some of the sites I admire have an "elite" clique of some sort. I went on a hunt for a decent host the other day, stumbled across a few nice domains and looked up their content. One domain had a clique and in the about section, the text went like this: "{{clique name disclosed}} isn't a clique to tell people they're better than others--well, ok, it is." Ok, WTF? First they contradict themselves, second, they are actually admitting this and STILL they form a clique? They think they're better than others? Some people really need a reality check. It's nice that these 15 year olds have nice design skills, but what the heck. What about content?? If a site has truckloads amount of content but a simple layout, does that mean they're any less good than these domain-owners? Some elite cliques are actually only by invitations only. A totally new concept, and a completely rude one. I can understand those "semi-elite" cliques, because they want actual content and a decent layout...but wholely-elite cliques are just pointless and rude.

I finally cleaned out my non-website-related e-mail inbox after not checking it for a month. O.o; 61 e-mails and 3 spam mails @.@

I agree with you too. I hate elite cliques and any form of etlism.

I love your layouts, Trin-chan! They are always so cool! He he, I know what you mean about old emails. I cleaned out my sent messages a while ago and found some pretty funny stuff (I tried to sound smart and cool so as to impress whoever I was writing. Never used StIcKY cApS either.)

Lmao. I don't think I ever used gratuitous amounts of net slang... *thinks* just the occasional 'u' and 'wot' which I got over very quickly. ^.^ I remember *my* first hosting application as well. The person said I sounded more mature than twelve. Lmao! o_O

I know how you feel about the IRL friends 'typing & spelin lyk dis' online. Even my best friend, who seems like the kind of person who would never use net slang actually uses it. It's scary. o_O

As for elite cliques-- they suck. They always make people feel like they have an inferior site to others. That person's clique.. the person who runs it sounds really rude! o_O

NAH ARGH!!! I'M LATE!!! I WANNA HOST!! ;__; I'd love a .nu (actually I had one but the freaking thing costed too much). BE VERY CAREFUL THERE ARE SO MANY FEES!!! CHANGING YOUR SERVER NAME DETAILS COST $US20 FOR EACH CHANGE! But ah, lucky you.

Argh so agree with your rants. Basically "tYpiNg LiKe Dis Sux". And eliteism sucks too.

WOW! *eyes pop out* This layout is absolutely amazing! I'm am so jealous XD. Ahh... I totally agree with you on the abbreviation stuff, my IRL friends do that so much. I was looking over my past websites' introductions and content and such, and I was absolutely appalled by how many "faces" I had in one sentence, heh. I think I still type with too many "...", "faces", and the laughter that I constantly express, but I guess it's getting a bit better. I can't wait to see your portfolio! =D

I have a hard time with cliques. I want to join because they will promote some visitation to your sites, but then I just despise them because they are so "in" right now. I tend to only join cliques though that I really relate to the meaning behind them or cliques of close online friends simply because I know those weren't created for some stupid reason with ignorant rules. I'm really nitpicky about cliques and a bit weird I suppose.

Hehe! If anything, I'd love to host you. :) And yeah!! You should make a portfolio. XD I'd love to see it. This layouts looks GREAT too! (before I only saw broken images o_o)

ANOTHER domain? Free .nu? Lucky. XP I still have no domain, each of my sites are hosted on a different domain, basically. ;_; I guess the reason for that is because my parents don't know I have a website. <_<;; BUT I do not want them viewing my blog and such, which is why I never plan on letting anyone know. *dies* Lucky. -_-;

I hate elite cliques too, I can't believe one of them actually said that they're better than others. That's terrible. >_<
